The SAS wishes to honor Carl Sagan by having the United States Postal Service issue a Forever stamp bearing Carl Sagan's image. Furthermore, we feel it is reasonable to request a series of stamps, with each one marking a different contribution that Sagan made to the world: Author, Researcher, Science Ambassador and Diplomat, Peace Activist, Architect of Solar System Exploration, Astronomer and Astrophysicist, Environmental Campaigner... the list could go on.

We would like to see the stamps announced by Autumn 2010, to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the release of the landmark science/history documentary series, COSMOS.

As it happens, individuals had contacted the USPS Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC) with similar ideas before the SAS was formed.

The Republic of Mali has seen fit to give Sagan and the Voyager probes an official governmental postage stamp. Now it's time for the US to do the same.

In fact, it is entirely reasonable, in light of recent developments, to request a concurrent stamp series marking the 13-episode COSMOS series. In just 13 hours, anyone can have a sort of basic science literacy and answers to the most fundamental questions that have haunted humanity since the beginning. COSMOS is a watershed moment in education, and also in television- it is the educational series by which all others are judged. One could make the argument that the Cosmic Calendar idea itself merits a dozen stamps, one for each "month".

User Registration for the SAS site will open as soon as technical challenges are better-understood. With registration, users will have access to a general plan of tactics and strategies; alliances with science groups, schools, astronomy clubs, peace/ecology advocacy groups, etc., mapped out.
